“Kayendriyasiddhirasuddhikshayat tapasah” ||
The purification of body and mind can be achieved by adopting proper austerity(tapas). There have been age old traditional forms of Tapas. One of the most ancient ones, known as Chandrayana, is observed for a whole month. The real aim of any fasting procedure adopted is not only to reduce weight and regulate other body parameters, but it should also be able to maintain the reduction and regulation thereafter. This is where the CV fits perfectly well.
Caturvargachintamani of Hemadri (13th century) is virtually an encyclopedia of Hindu religious rites and observances. According to him one should start chadrayana vrata from 14th day of suklapaksha in the pausamasa and continue one month to overcome all his sins.
Chandra is the presiding deity of this vrata and so it is called “Chandrayana vrata”. Therefore this vrata should be started from full moon day and end in the next full moon day. In the beginning of this vrata various gods are to be invoked and offerings are to be made. The ‘Hutasista’ the food remaining after offering in the sacrifice is to be consumed.
